Getting married in Tenerife, Spain – CIVIL MARRIAGE.
In order to get married in Spain, both foreign and Spanish nationals need to comply with certain conditions, and to provide a list of certain documents. Please find below an exhaustive list of documents you will normally be asked to provide:
1. IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENT
- The parties intending to get married need to provide their passports and/or identification documents. Please note there are some special requirements for non-EU citizens, as these may also need a visa and/or residence card.
2. CERTIFICATES OF BIRTH
- A certified and attested copy of your birth certificate will be required; it must have been issued within the last six months. This document is issued by the Local Civil Registry Office where your birth was registered. You will need a ‘traducción jurada’ into Spanish; it must be apostilled as well.
3. Proof of Civil Status
- What we in Spanish call «Certificado de Estado Civil», which attests that you are free to contract marriage. It must have been issued within the last six months. You will also need a ‘traducción jurada’ if the document is not in Spanish. If you are divorced or widowed, please make sure that you provide a copy of your decree of divorce or a death certificate of your previous spouse if this is applicable.
4. Empadronamiento (MUNICIPAL CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION)
- It’s issued by the Ayuntamiento of the city or municipality where you live.
5. Certificate of No Impediment (Certificado de No Impedimento)
- It proves there are no obstacles to the marriage which is intended.
7. Sworn DECLARATION of Marital Status (Declaración Jurada de Estado Civil)
- This is required by some cities, which have authority to request a sworn declaration proving that you are entitled to contract marriage.
8. Witnesses
- The presence of at least 2 witnesses will be required.
9. Application Form
- Fill in the civil marriage application form at the Civil Registry Office where you are intending to get married.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- Document Translation & Legalization: Any document which is not originally issued in SPANISH must be duly translated into SPANISH by a TRADUCTOR JURADO – translations signed by translators registered abroad and not in SPAIN are NOT ACCEPTED in SPAIN for this purpose.
